Tere Martinez

Co-Founder, Artistic and Education Director / Cofundadora; Directora Artística y Educativa

Tere is a Puerto Rican playwright and educator. She has been using and developing drama-in-education techniques in a range of teaching environments for more than twenty years. Whether in her classroom at Hostos Community College in the South Bronx, or during skill-building workshops in alternative learning environments, Tere says, “It never fails: when engaging students through drama, that’s when most of the learning happens.”

Tere developed the Roots and Action model in 2011 when she designed and implemented Chain Reaction, a project inspired by the life and work of legendary Puerto Rican community leader Antonia Pantoja. Since then she has been refining and growing the model for a range of students. Tere is thrilled and proud to bring Roots and Action to Puerto Rico, and to finally have the opportunity to serve young people in her native country.

Tere es una dramaturga y educadora puertorriqueña. Ha estado usando y desarrollando técnicas de teatro educativo, en una amplia gama de ambientes de enseñanza, durante más de veinte años. Ya sea en su salón de clases en Hostos Community College en el Bronx, o en talleres de desarrollo de destrezas en ambientes educativos alternativos, Tere nos dice: “No falla: cuando envolvemos a los estudiantes mediante el teatro, es cuando más aprenden.”

Tere desarrolló el modelo de Raíces y Acción en el año 2011, cuando diseño e implementó Chain Reaction, un proyecto inspirado en la vida y obra de la legendaria líder comunitaria puertorriqueña Antonia Pantoja. Desde entonces, ha estado refinando y ampliando el modelo para una gama variada de estudiantados. Para Tere representa una profunda emoción traer Raíces y Acción a Puerto Rico, y tener finalmente la oportunidad de servir a la juventud de su Puerto Rico natal.

Barbara Vlahides

Co-Founder, Executive Director / Cofundadora y Directora ejecutiva

Barbara has worked in project and operations management for most of her career. Starting out in software development and moving into media production, she has served businesses large and small in a variety of industries, including education, entertainment and manufacturing. Before joining Roots and Action, her work focused on accessible media for people with disabilities, and she continues to run her own audio production company. Barbara earned a B.A. in economics and French, and an M.B.A. with a concentration in information technology, both from New York University.

Barbara’s lifelong love for Puerto Rico, and her sincere desire to make a meaningful contribution to its future, led her to join Roots and Action. She has worked with Tere Martínez on several educational theater projects in the U.S. and Puerto Rico and believes strongly in Tere’s vision. Moreover, Barbara believes in the young people of Puerto Rico and in their ability to lead the change they want to see in their country.

Barbara se ha desempeñado en el área de administración de proyectos y operación de empresas durante la mayor parte de su trayectoria profesional. Comenzando en el desarrollo de software, y siguiendo con la producción de medios, ha trabajado para grandes y pequeñas empresas en el ámbito de la educación, entretenimiento y manufactura. Previo a unirse al equipo de Raíces y Acción, se enfocó en el acceso a los medios para personas con discapacidades, y al momento continúa a cargo de su propia empresa de producción de audio. Obtuvo un bachillerato en artes (B.A.) en economía y Francés, así como una maestría en administración de empresas (M.B.A.) con concentración en tecnología informática de New York University.

Su amor por Puerto Rico, de toda la vida, y su deseo sincero de hacer una contribución relevante a su porvenir, la llevó a unirse a Raíces y Acción. Ha trabajado con Tere Martínez en varios proyectos de teatro educativo en los Estados Unidos y Puerto Rico, además de ser fiel creyente en la visión de Tere. Además, Barbara cree en la juventud puertorriqueña y en su capacidad de liderar el cambio que quieren para su país.

Janio Marrero

Founding Board Member / Miembro Fundador de la Junta

Born and Raised in San Juan, Puerto Rico, he moved to New York in 2000 to pursue a career in theater. Janio has held Facilities Director, Technical Director, and Production Manager positions at Cherry Lane Theatre since 2004. In 2017 he was named Cherry Lane Theatre’s Co-Artistic Director. Shortly after that, Hurricane Maria struck Puerto Rico. In order to help with the local relief efforts he founded the Indestructible: Campaign and has produced several events to fundraise towards aide for the island. Janio is an Interview Panelist for the Administrative Fellowship Program at Harlem Stage, a Producer for The Chicago Sketch Comedy Festival of 2018 and a mentor for National Monologue Slam contestants. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Theatre from Fordham University.

Nacido y criado en San Juan, Puerto Rico, se trasladó a Nueva York en el año 2000 para dedicarse al teatro.  Ha ocupado el puesto de Director de Facilidades, Director Técnico, y Gerente de Producción en Cherry Lane Theatre desde el año 2004.  En el 2017 fue nombrado Co-director Artístico de Cherry Lane.  Poco después, el Huracán María azotó a Puerto Rico.  Con el propósito de ayudar a los esfuerzos de asistencia a la Isla, fundó la campaña Indestructible y ha producido diversos eventos de recaudación de fondos para Puerto Rico.  Es Panelista de Entrevistas para el Programa Administrativo de Becas del Harlem Stage, Productor del Chicago Sketch Comedy Festival de 2018 y mentor de los participantes del National Monologue Slam.  Posee un bachillerato en artes con concentración el Arte Dramático de la Universidad de Fordham.

SARAH HOILAND, PH.D.

Board Member / Miembro de la Junta

Dr. Hoiland is an Assistant Professor of Sociology at the City University of New York’s (CUNY’s) Eugenio María de Hostos Community College in the Bronx. She is a 2019 Mellon/ ACLS Community College Faculty Fellow, serves as Hostos’ Chair of the Service-Learning and Civic Engagement Committee and Coordinator of Service Learning. Dr. Hoiland earned her Ph.D. from The New School for Social Research in New York, NY and specializes in feminist ethnography, gender, and subcultures.

As Hostos colleagues, Professors Hoiland and Martínez collaborated on several grant-funded activities. A deep and abiding professional relationship developed as well as a friendship. Sarah is honored to serve as a Roots and Action board member.

Dra. Hoiland es catedrática auxiliar de sociología de la Universidad de la Ciudad de Nueva York (CUNY) Eugenio María de Hostos Community College en el Bronx. Es ‘faculty fellow’ del 2019 Mellon/ACLS Community College y preside los comités de Aprendizaje en Servicio y Participación de la Comunidad de Hostos Community College. Dra. Hoiland recibió su doctorado del New School for Social Research de la ciudad de Nueva York y se especializa en etnografía feminista, género y subculturas.

Siendo colégas en Hostos, las profesoras Hoiland y Martínez colaboraron en varias actividades financiadas con becas. Desde entonces han desarrollado una profunda y duradera relación profesional y amistad. Sarah se siente honrada de servir como miembro de la junta de Raíces y Acción.

Julie Friesner

Board Member/ Miembro de la Junta

Julie Friesner is a management consultant, grantwriter, and program evaluator. She has over 30 years of experience conducting in-depth, quantitative and qualitative evaluations of public and nonprofit programs and organizations, including K-12 schools, colleges and universities, after-school programs, museums, libraries, child welfare agencies, health care institutions, and membership and service organizations. She holds a Master’s degree in Public Administration from NYU’s Wagner School of Public Administration. Julie is also a poet and writer.

Julie Friesner es consultora en administración, escritora de subvenciones y evaluadora de programas. Tiene más de 30 años de experiencia realizando evaluaciones detalladas tanto cuantitativas como cualitativas para programas y organizaciones públicas y sin fines de lucro, estas incluyen escuelas K-12, universidades, programas para después de la escuela, museos, bibliotecas, agencias para el bienestar infantil, instituciones de salud, y organizaciones de membresía y servicio. Posee una maestría en administración pública de Wagner School of Public Administration de NYU. Julie es también poeta y escritora.
